poem: mixed blessing

mixed blessing

you remind me of an actress I’ve always liked
sitting there across the table saying horrible things
I’ve only just arrived – you’re the second person I’ve met
if this is any indication, Tennessee is a mixed blessing
yet I find months later, while sitting in the meager shade
of a young oak tree in an entirely different state
that it’s not your intentionally shocking words I remember
but the smile in your eyes that suggests it was all a test
I’ll have to wait by the mailbox to find out if I passed
