POEM: West Danville, VT

West Danville, VT

it’s slightly too windy to be pleasant
but people are here anyway
a man fishes along the bank of the pond
a woman, underdressed for the gusts
sits a few paces behind him, encouraging
at the other end of the pond: two cyclists
not an inch of Spandex between them
straggly gray hair barely
corralled by tenuous ball caps
unbuttoned brown shirts blowing in the wind
an older couple eats lunch at
the only other occupied picnic table
locals, apparently, because a passing car
honks at them & they wave
a single duck takes to the air
