POEM: holiday at the lake

holiday at the lake

at the beach but not on it
under a tree, reading a book

couples swim & lie in the sand
unpack little lunches

the waves come in gently
a tanned boy builds a castle

“where are you visiting from?”
looking up from her crossword

“we live here”
one eye on his grandchild

the sun shines off the wave tops
evergreens ring the lake

under the tree, he writes it all down
wonders who he might tell
