POEM: 12 Romanians laying laminate flooring

12 Romanians laying laminate flooring
for Annalisa Barron

12 Romanians laying laminate flooring
watch her, all of 25, swing a hammer

their mouths, to a man, hang open in awe
at this site, unknown in their homeland

she brings the hammer down on the head
of the nail, driving it into the threshold

one Romanian catches the eye of another
“are you seeing this?” he asks wordlessly

“if this is possible, this swinging of the hammer,
what else might this world contain?”
