POEM: I would have thought

I would have thought

I thought
        for a moment
it was starting to rain
then I realized I was dreaming
                of you

in a bus on George Street
in York, Pennsylvania
                remembering

my son finding a rusty
box-cutter in the bushes
in front of a govt. bldg.
                on Cape Cod

funny what pops in my head

I played jazz with a guy
        from York
whose wife
        also from York
had been the prom date
of a soon-to-be-famous
rock musician
        also, of course, from York

I wouldn’t have thought of him
                otherwise

but you
        on the other hand
I would have thought
                of you

8 October 2012
on a bus between
Harrisburg, PA
& Baltimore, MD
