the Quaker meeting house sits

POEM: vespers

vespers

the house is quiet
a chickadee sings nearby
cars pass on the road below
somewhere close the dog naps

yet again my attention is drawn
toward the great question
at the heart of all people
the question that cannot be answered

I was, I wasn’t, I am, I’m not, I will be, I won’t be
I shot twenty-four arrows this afternoon
one hit the small pink target on the hay bale
the rest disappeared into the mist

I have a post office box & a driver’s license
am I real now?

afterward

afterward

it can become a self-fulfilling prophecy, she said
I know, I said, it’s something I need to work on
I was sitting by the little radio set in the bunker
sending out our ID every few minutes
to see whether anyone would respond
we hadn’t heard from anyone in days
we weren’t sure what it looked like outside
whether the heat from the blasts
had left a blank slate above us
CQ, CQ, this is Vermont, I said again, waited
just a faint crackling in the speakers
as likely to be electrical interference as anything
maybe we should let go, she said, accept it
I’m not ready yet, I said, not yet
CQ, CQ, this is Vermont
CQ, CQ, this is Vermont
