POEM: again, pashal

again, pashal

one after another
they approach the edge
of the subway platform
and look down the tunnel
for signs of a train

as if the looking
makes the train come faster

following the same impulse
each person in turn
pushes the elevator button
even when the arrow is lit

but the leaf flows downstream
taken by chance and the current
and the sidewalk leads everywhere
if you let it
