POEM: Jackson, Mississippi

Jackson, Mississippi

where we sit in the yard
while the wind blows old rain
out of the oak tree
Mike is smoking a pipe
helping me solve all
the problems of the world
I’ve saved some stories
waiting for this afternoon
for the chance to tell someone
who doesn’t need exposition
later Gen and I watch
Cassandra Wilson videos
and swap music stories
while Jack plays surgeon
on a video game
outside a creature who may
or may not be a mouse
eats bird seed under the feeder
skillfully avoiding the dog
