POEM: waiting for

I sat in a comfy chair at the bookstore
a book about Shakespeare open on my lap
I waited a long time but you didn’t come

we didn’t have a plan to meet up
I was trying to conjure you into existence
maybe I should have been facing north

or reading a different kind of book
I had hiking shoes on in case you wanted
to escape into the forest with me

but I ended up leaving alone
I didn’t even buy the book
