Must Love Dogs
you loved dogs so much
it was one of my favorite things about you
to have such compassion and joy
for something so simple
when we’d meet a dog on the street
you’d always stop and ask to pet it
I’d send you photos of dogs
encountered on my travels
even now when I see a dog I think of you
I wish I could hear the pitch of your voice change
I wish I could stand back and smile
and wait for you to slip your warm hand into mine
